Ibán García del Blanco served as member of the European Parliament (EP) during the IX term, from July 2019 to July 2024.
As the EP coordinator of the Progressive Alliance of Socialist and Democrats (S&D) in the Legal Affairs Committee (JURI), among other responsibilities, García del Blanco was part of the negotiating team for the Artificial Intelligence Act; rapporteur for opinion on the Data Act, and for the legislative initiative report on An ethical framework for artificial intelligence, robotics and related technologies, co-rapporteur for the initiative report on virtual worlds, and for the proposal on disclosure of income tax information by certain undertakings and branches (public Country -by-Country reporting). Also, García del Blanco was responsible for the monitoring of the activities of the governing bodies of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
In the Culture and Education Committee, García del Blanco was the rapporteur of the initiative file on Cultural diversity and the conditions for authors in the European music streaming market.
In addition, García del Blanco was the EP coordinator of the S&D in the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in a Digital Age -whose mandate ended in March 2022-, and he was a member of the Committee of Inquiry to Investigate the Use of Pegasus and Equivalent Surveillance Spyware.
García del Blanco was also a member of the EP Delegations for the relations with the Andean countries and the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EUROLAT).
Moreover, Ibán García del Blanco served as the co-chair of the Sports Group that operates in the EP. The Group is a key platform for sport stakeholders and policy makers to gather, exchange views and explore collaboration opportunities.
Within his political party, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), García del Blanco served as a member of the Federal Executive Commission in charge of Culture and Sports from 2017 to 2022, and was Executive Director of its think Tank “Fundación Pablo Iglesias”. He is also a member of the Royal Board of the National Library of Spain.
García del Blanco holds a degree in Law, and he has specialized in cultural management and intellectual property, and during 2018 and 2019 was president of ”Acción Cultural Española”, the branch of the Government of Spain in charge of promoting and sustaining Spanish culture in Spain and abroad.
